Christmas in July - Crafty Crusader All-Star Interview: OneRedBoot

Throughout the past six months of the Holiday Handmade Crusade, a few of the crusaders have gone above and beyond to reach their personal holiday crafting goals. They have done this by crafting objects en masse or working on long-term projects. I am hereby referring to these folks with the honorable title of "Crafty Crusader All-Stars." Our second Crafty Crusader All-Star is Craftster user OneRedBoot. OneRedBoot's crusade has been all about socks, socks and MORE socks. Let's learn more about her below, shall we?

Socks by OneRedBoot

What is your real name?

Karen G.

Where are you from?

I’m from Oklahoma and Texas, but have lived in North Carolina for the past five years.

How old are you?

I’m turning 33 at the end of this month!

How did you come up with your username?

There’s a character in Michael Chabon’s Wonder Boys who is described as “compulsively clad in red cowboy boots.” I always felt a certain affinity with her! I wear my red cowboy boots so often, there is always one lone red boot lying on the floor somewhere around the house.

What do you do for a living?

I’m a grad student in art history. I’m writing my dissertation on contemporary art and religion. When the semester starts at the end of August, I’ll have been in grad school for 7 years. I’m ready to finish this book!

Do you have any favorite craft(s)?

I love the process of knitting, and I love the products of sewing, especially dressmaking and garment sewing. With the combination of knitting and sewing, I’ve made almost my whole wardrobe for the past few seasons (with the exception of a few thrifted or sustainably-dyed items). I recently snagged some amazing wool suitings in a swap on Craftster and am really excited to use some of my collection of vintage patterns to make some cute winter dresses and this amazing 1930s Katherine Hepburn jacket from Eva Dress.

How many years have you been knitting?

My mom taught me to knit one semester in college when I got mono and had to drop out of school. Come to think of it, illness seems to really motivate me in fiber-related crafts...I taught myself to knit about five years ago, when an auto-immune illness knocked me on my ass! Since I learned from a book, it actually took me a year to realize that I was twisting my stitches in basic stockinette stitch!

My grandmother was a prolific knitter—I had all the electric blue cotton vests with hearts that I needed in the 80s! When she died, I received all of her crochet hooks, huge amounts of 1970s superwash wool, and a beat-up but very sturdy ironing board, all of which I am still using today. A wonderful, practical inheritance, if you ask me.

How many pairs of socks have you made during the Holiday Handmade Crusade?

So far I’ve finished 15 pairs of socks. Pair #16 is on the needles right now. Before this January, I had only ever made two pairs of socks. My decision to give socks as gifts for friends and family this Christmas was partly a challenge to myself to learn how to do it really well, and partly a way of economizing by using my stash.

OneRedBoot Socks

Most of the yarns I’ve used for my socks have come from bartering on Craftster and Ravelry over the past year. I also found 4 pounds of apricot-colored wool at a thrift store, and I enlisted the help of my friend lapoli (on Craftster) to dye it royal blue and brown—perfect for men’s socks! Bartering and thrifting for sock yarn has meant that I’ve had to be pretty flexible: I’ve made socks with weights from fingering to worsted, and used needles from size 2 to size 6. Working with so many different variables has helped me to really understand the ideas behind sock construction.

I only have a few more pairs left to go! But I’m still planning to participate in the Holiday Handmade Crusade when they are completed…I still have to finish my Christmas cards (made of recycled holiday cards from last year), embroider some dish towels, and work on an as-yet-to-be-decided large knitted item for Mr. Boot, among other things.

What has been your favorite part about participating in the Holiday Handmade Crusade?

I love the motivation of habit. That’s how I’m writing my dissertation—I write every weekday—and how I get any long-term project done. Getting into the habit of working on something ensures its completion! I work on socks for a half hour or so most evenings after dinner, while Mr. Boot plays Mario Kart on the Wii. I keep a stack of completed socks in my craft room, and toward the end of every month, I take pictures and post them in the thread on Craftster. It’s a great way to keep track of what I’m doing.

Also, fellow Crusaders have helped me through various gift-related existential crises. When I was growing up, gift-giving was really fraught—a thoughtful gift was a sign of love (of course), but on the other hand, a gift that didn’t go over well or didn’t please the recipient would lead my mother to analyze and re-hash the relationship for hours. Even though I’ve renounced that kind of high-anxiety attitude, I do sometimes worry…I mean, I think hand-knit socks are a luxury, but who knows? Anyway, Geek+Nerd has created a great place for talking about these kinds of concerns—which can really derail your productivity! It’s been super helpful for me.

I’m looking forward to seeing how everyone packages their gifts and how happy we’ll all be in December when we are free to enjoy the holidays!!!

Lastly, but *MOST* importantly, what is your favorite ice cream flavor?

Peanut butter chocolate. Mmmmm…

Christmas in July - Crafty Crusader All-Star Interview: Homerof2

Throughout the past six months of the Holiday Handmade Crusade, a few of the crusaders have gone above and beyond to reach their personal holiday crafting goals. They have done this by crafting objects en masse or working on long-term projects. I am hereby referring to these folks with the honorable title of "Crafty Crusader All-Stars." Our first Crafty Crusader All-Star is Craftster user Homerof2. She has been piecing together a Christmas quilt since January. Let's learn a little more about her below, shall we?

Homerof2 Christmas Quilt

What is your real name?

Cindy E

Where are you from?

Lacombe, Alberta, Canada

How old are you?

43

Tell me, how did you come up with your username?

When I joined Craftster, I was homeschooling both of my sons and decided I wanted something relating to homeschool so I came up with homerof2.

Eight Point Star

What do you do for a living?

I'm a domestic engineer :)

What would be your favorite crafts?

Quilting and crochet.

How many years have you been quilting?

About 8 years.

Homerof2 Christmas Quilt

How many squares have you made so far during the Holiday Handmade Crusade?

Fourteen that I've posted and two more that are yet to be shown...

Homerof2's Christmas Quilt!

What has been your favorite part about participating in the Holiday Handmade Crusade?

It gave me the motivation to actually work on my Christmas quilt and hopefully have it finished in time for Christmas 2009. I've also enjoyed seeing what others are making.

Anything else you would like to tell us about this project?

No one will know this, since I haven't put down the names of the squares, but for a little 'challenge' to myself, I decided rather than just randomly pick squares I like, I would follow the letters of the alphabet. January's patterns started with "A" and "B", February's patterns were "C" and "D", and so on. It's been fun because it gets me looking at different squares. It was hard to find a " J" square, though!

That's a very creative way to challenge yourself! Okay, lastly, but most importantly, what is your favorite ice cream flavor?

Leaping Lizard. If you aren't familiar with that flavor, it's a combination of lime, orange and licorice.

Wow! Thanks for the interview, Cindy. Isn't her beautiful quilt such an inspiration? It just goes to show that if you set a little bit of time aside over a span of a few months that you can create something really beautiful. I cannot wait to see the finished product!

Christmas in July - June Theme Crafty-Papa!

The June theme for the Holiday Handmade Crusade was "Crafty-Papa." Surprise, surprise, May's theme was tweaked in June to honor the awesome men in our lives. The crusaders were challenged to use a little extra Father's Day crafty mojo to make a gift for the winter holidays. Of course, the theme could be expanded to craft for your grandfathers, stepfathers, new fathers, any man that is special in your life.

Let me share some "manly" links for dad/dude crafting...

I love this cardboard shadowbox via DesignSponge. You could make this for anyone really, but I thought it would be an awesome way to display some of my dear husband's knick knacks from places that he's traveled. I personally haven't gotten around to it, but feel free to take the idea and run with it!

I will eventually get around to whipping up a few golf towels, like these, for my dad. (Are we noticing a theme here, I didn't complete my own theme for June, whoops!) What golf-loving dad doesn't appreciate towels?!

This pillow/remote control holder is pretty deck. I'm thinking the sports-loving folk would appreciate this one.

If you're really bored, and stuck for ideas, visit my del.icio.us page, tagged guy_friendly. There you will crafty gift ideas for boys and men.

Which brings me to my favorite entry for June, which has nothing to do with Father's Day!

God's Eye with Sand Dollar

Again the outstanding entry is from the uber talented Pam aka Gingerbread Snowflakes , who submitted her entry via e-mail. This month she made God's Eye ornaments, with treasure frames! And beads!

God's eye with Bead

Though Pam's entry wasn't theme specific, it could easily be adapted into a crafty-papa gift. Think of how lovely it would be for your dad to receive a God's eye ornament with a special token, or family photo attached to the frame. (I have some shells I fished out of the lake on my wedding day that just might be destined for this type of ornament.) Pam's tutorial is wonderful, and with your imagination, you could really personalize it, and make it your own!

Christmas in July - May Theme Crafty-Mama!

The May theme for the Holiday Handmade Crusade was "Crafty-Mama." We honored our mum's in May by using a little extra Mother's Day crafty mojo to make a gift for the winter holidays. Participants were free to expand the theme to craft for their grandmothers, stepmothers, new mothers, any woman that is special in their life. Crafting for the kiddos was A-OK too! Because without kiddos, would there be crafty-mamas???

Mother's Day has long passed now, but maybe this post will inspire you to make something for your mom over the summer...

First off, Craftster user Loulabear has been making gifts all year long without a specific intended recipient. It's good to stockpile!

She made these awesome recycled magazine gift bows:

And some eco-themed stamped stationary:

Eco-Stationary - YAY!

Craftster user Christephi made gifts for her grandmothers...a walker bag,

Walker Bag

and a seriously cool recycled denim apron!

My favorite entry for May was sent in by Pam aka Gingerbread Snowflakes , who submitted her entry via e-mail. She writes "My Mom loves and collects dragons so I made her a sea dragon ornament using punched tin!"

Tin Seahorse

Pam has a few great posts on punched tin such as, How to Make Punched Tin Butterflies, Embellishing Your Beautiful Punched Tin Butterflies and Punched Tin Inspiration and Ideas.

Christmas in July - April Theme Eco Friendly Crafting

The April theme for the Holiday Handmade Crusade was "eco-friendly crafting." The challenge was to re-use, revamp, recycle and upcycle! It was a bit of a slumpy crafting month for the crusaders, so I only have one favorite project to share today. It's a brilliant one though! Hope this inspires you to hit up the Goodwill instead of the mall this Christmas!

Okay, ready to fall off your chair in a fit of cuteness overload?

MUSTACHE MUGS!!!

Mustache Mugs!

Craftster user LrsChic writes: I made mustache mugs for my Dad, myself, and either my brother or my boyfriend. I can't decide which of them would enjoy this more. Yes, I did say there's one for me! I love these mugs.

I found the mugs at the dollar store, already with the black circle around the top. I thought some black mustaches would look wonderful on them. Since Michaels craft store was having a sale, the ceramic paint pen only cost me $1.99. Hooray!

The adorable action shot:

Mustache Mug Action Shot!

Project variation: Awhile ago, on Craftster, I saw a fun project where the crafter had personalized mugs with a ceramic paint pen by putting the recipients coffee preferences on it. For example if I were making one for myself I would write: Milk only, no sugar.

There are so many coffee mugs waiting to be embellished at your local Goodwill or Salvation Army for 50 cents and up. This idea is eco-friendly, affordable and unique! Thanks LrsChic!

Christmas in July - March Theme Craft a Memory

The March theme for the Holiday Handmade Crusade was "craft a memory." I challenged the crusaders to think of all of the memories that they've made with a certain person, then use those memories as a catalyst for a craft project. I really enjoyed some of the personal stories that came about because of this theme. The following projects were my favorites. I hope that they inspire you!

Craftster user LoulaBear made this beautiful broomstick lace wrap for her best friend. The tutorial that she followed can be found on Roman Sock.

Broomstick Lace Wrap

Craftster user Chanel made this adorable owl plush for her daughter.

Owl Plush

She writes: When my daughter was five she found a coat and fell absolutely in love with it. It was a furry hot pink Cheetah print with pink pleather and was reversible. Well since that little coat she has loved all things cheetah print and still loves hot pink...Being the sentimental (or is that just mental?) mother I saved the coat thinking I would eventually craft something from it and I finally have. I made her an owl stuffie because she has been begging me for one. Now I just have to keep it hidden until Christmas!

Craftster user Woobie followed this E-how tutorial and made a whopping TWENTY-FIVE Scrabble tile necklaces. Way to go, Woobie!

25 Scrabble Tile Necklaces

And lastly, Craftster user GumInMyHair made this amazing t-shirt quilt for her teenage daughter...

T-shirt Quilt

She writes: I saved several t-shirts that my daughter wore when she was little (they all had holes or stains, etc. so I couldn't donate them) for the purpose of making her this quilt when she got older. When I saw this month's theme, I knew it was time to do it.

It's a rag quilt. I added little things to the squares like a "C" pocket, applique heart and fish, stamped a few with flowers, etc., but mostly I painted bedbugs on it.

She's a teenager now and I'm hoping she likes the memories that these shirts bring back.
