Gearing Up for Valentine's Day at Geek+Nerd

01-29-2007 talk me darling with a mushroom of love ornament 0101-29-2007 a little wee love note 02A little shop update happened today! I'm dubbing these "Talk to me darling with a mushroom of love" ornaments, a play on one of my fave Pretenders songs. These are so precious! The little felted love note in size is less than one inch square! In the update there are mushrooms with white tops/red bottoms, heart ornaments and a pink simple scarf (that I did a tute for awhile ago) that I've renamed the Dot dot dot scarf. It's going to be hard to let this stuff go - it's so cute! Check it out :)

I'm a weirdo

The Rules: Each player of this game starts with "6 weird things about you". Each person who gets tagged needs to write a blog post of their own 6 weird things as well as clearly state this rule. After you state your 6 weird things, you need to choose 6 people to be tagged and list their names. Don't forget to leave a comment that says "you're tagged" in their comments and tell them to read your blog for information as to what it means. So here are my six weird things.

Weird Portrait 1 1. I have an eye freckle. Yes, that's right, I said "eye freckle." In my left eye, below my pupil, there is a very distinct black drop. When a room is well lit, it's very noticeable and I get lots of comments on it, like, "Cool!" So yes, hmm, eye freckle.

Weird Portrait 2 2. I DETEST the backs of my pants being wet from snow/rain. Wet cuffs touching my ankles gives me the heebie jeebies. In fact wet feet drive me crazy in general. I am very careful to stand over the mat to dry off after taking a shower, whereas my lovely husband drips like a shaggy dog over the linoleum. If I wet my feet it's fine, stepping in someone else's shower/snow puddle drives me to insanity. Anywho, back to the pant leg thing, I will usually roll up my pants if the weather is wet outside, even when it's snowing, leaving me with very cold calves indeed and looking like I'm making an odd fashion statement, (which isn't that far from normal according to most people anyways).

Weird Portrait 3 3. I did not get my driver's license until I was 23 years old. At first, I was too busy with ballet in high school to learn how to drive, then in college I didn't really need it, then it just became this weird terrified paranoia of getting into a car accident. My ever patient wonderful hubby taught me how to drive. Poor thing dealt with me sobbing nearly every time we pulled out of the driveway - and then when I had to learn standard it was like doing it all over again. Now I am generally fearless when it comes to being on the road except in stop and start traffic and travelling at high speeds - for me that would be 70+ mph.

Weird Portrait 4 4. When I was little I used to spread my hair out on the pillow before I went to bed and pretend that I was Sleeping Beauty. I still do this sometimes. OOOH one even better, (I'm a very weird person), when I was little I used to walk by the ocean and sing the "Ahhhh ahhh ahhh" song from the Little Mermaid, because I wanted the opposite to happen to me. I wanted to turn from human to mermaid. I was completely obsessed. (I don't do this anymore).

Weird Portrait 5 5. I have an extraordinarily bendy back. I suppose some of this comes from dance, but many people I know exclaim that I must be missing a vertebrae or something. I can bend backwards and nearly touch my bum with the back of my head. It's a little disturbing and great for party tricks!

Weird Portrait 6 6. I used to memorize my dad's high school yearbook, from 1958. I went to the theatre one time, in the city he went to highschool at, and I recognized one of the ushers as one of my dad's classmates. I marched right up to her and said, "Are you so and so? Class of 1958? St. Antoine's? I'm Gerry Duclos' daughter." Practically scared the bejeesus out of the woman. Like who is this random little girl who knows all about my life?!

There are many many more things, but I can't give you all of my material at once :)

EDIT: I actually just thought of something that I HAD to mention, because it's too weird. I'm a little obsessive compulsive when I'm doing laundry in that I NEED to see what year the quarter was minted. If it's a "state" quarter (International readers: in 2000 I think it was the government started issuing quarters to represent all fifty states - they release four a year or something...) that I haven't seen before, I need to examine it before it goes into the washing machine/dryer. Tad crazy.

I'm going to be a cheat and only tag two people, because SO many blogs that I read have already done this. I tag Joleen and Renee.

Winter Blahs

I can't believe that it's been so long since my last post. I seriously think that I'm going through post holiday blah-ness this year or something. I haven't posted because I have absolutely nothing to post. I have achieved nothing crafty in the past two weeks whatsoever! I've put up curtains in the "craft room in progress." In progress meaning that I have torn everything to bits in there and put up some curtains to appease the nastiness of it all. Sigh.

I do however have some lovely new earrings from Vento na Praia. These are so gorgeous in person and I'm showing two of the same picture because with/without flash they both have their faults. These set me back like eleven dollars, and that included shipping from Portugal - holy awesomeness that's all I've got to say. These are definitely new favorites.

Since I've been so unproductive I'd thought I'd share a few linkety links:

Noel the Puppy: A few people at my mum's place of work read my blog and they have been asking after Noel, a story I told my mum about. WARNING if you click on this link and you love animals this will most likely make you cry. Noel is a puppy with extensive injuries that Bernie has taken in. She runs a not for profit animal shelter that retrains and cares for dogs that have been in extreme abusive situations. They think that Noel was a "bait dog" meaning that she was used for baits in dog fights. I think my brother in law put it best, "The people that would do that should be let loose in an open field and chased with shotguns." Haha - what a hunter response!

SuperBuzzy has updated their wares and I am completely speechless with drool for all of their new products. If. only. I. had. any. money! Love this, this should be in my kitchen somehow, muy bien!, adore this!

No Pants Subway Ride: This is excellent for a laugh - found via 52 Projects.

I'll be doing that "weird" meme soon - I was tagged by Gemma. Until then - cheers!

Going Vertical

01-14-2007 going vertical Boy did I wake up on the wrong side of the bed today. I was one crabby girl when plans for the day got sidelined due to weather and I promptly did nothing with my day! Until a few hours ago. A big project that I'm working on for the new year is re-doing my tiny craft room. I'm attempting to make space to accomodate a little practice area where my husband can play bass. The book shelf used to occupy this space in the hall - and I have no larger shelf to replace it - nor can I afford any for the time being. So I've stacked the book shelf onto my fabric storage unit, (which is a gutted out old stand up radio that has been painted white and has a little fairy tale cottage on it - my mom made it forever ago for me!), and I kinda like the result. A little ghetto? Yes. But desperate times call for desperate measures my friends, and now I have a clear corner in that craft room.

01-14-2007 new sweater Now yesterday was a much happier day! My sister and I went to Tarjet-olay for the first time since it's opened. Sigh. Target is the superstore of my dreams. Damn their perfect marketing ploys. Ren bought me this super cute sweater to the right. (Thanks Ren!) It's a much cuter pea-ish green than this dark photo lets on. I especially love the puffy sleeves!

After shoppity shopping we headed back to Ren's for some superb sushi and movie watching. We watched Must Love Dogs, (John Cusack, always good in my book), and Million Dollar Baby, which made me change my reservations about Hillary Swank, but sweet lord what a tear jerker! I wished afterwards that we had watched that first so at least we could end off on the lovey dovey cutesy movie, hahaha!

I have tomorrow off for Martin Luther King Day and I suspect I'll be plugging away more at that craft room and working on some sewing for a shop update in the near future!

Cheers everybody :)

Tea Party!

01-12-2007 tea party01-12-2007 comfort

I found out about the tea party at the last moment, so I am arriving in my pajamas. Late and unfashionable! Harumpf! I'm drinking lemon jasmine tea today. An online tea party is such the perfect thing for me, because the hubby and I are tea fanatics. So much so that I dropped a hefty amount of moolah on buying some fancy schmancy teas for him for Christmas at Licorice and Sloe. You must check this place out if you live in New Hampshire/Massachusetts. It's in Newburyport, MA, and it's a tea house! There are about a zillion varieties of tea which you can get with a scone with devonshire cream. Yum yum! They even have tea tastings! These people are as serious about tea as some people are about wine. Very interesting - Matt and I might go down for a tasting ourselves one day soon.

01-12-2007 edward gorey mug Like I said, I'm in my pjs so I decided to forgo the formal teaware and drink from one of my favorite comfort mugs. This Edward Gorey illustration is very appropriate for how I'm feeling today. My muscles have been pulled in 20 directions dancing this week. I've been taking class four days a week and teaching five days a week. I'm loving it, but my body is hating it! Haha - I'm so sore! Time to snuggle down onto the couch and sip on some hot comfort tea...

Bitty Winter Blooms

01-10-2007 bitty winter blooms

I've only been doing some very light crafting over the past few days. These are so fun to make! These little beauties are going to be brooches for the lucky people that commented on my "First Five" post. I tried to match the colors to the personalities that commented.

I've actually been blogging elsewhere. Shocking! Well, not craft-blogging, but dance blogging! I started a blog for my work as a dance teacher, so I can use it to communicate to my students and parents. I'm very pleased with the ease of it all and I can't believe that I haven't thought of this before! If there are any dance nerds out there, reading in crafty land, check it out!

Sweet Little Gifts

01-04-2007 Artstream Necklace My mom came over today with two sweet little gifts from Susan of Artstream Studios. I gave her one of my Santa ornaments and she was so kind to not only give me an ornament, but this beautiful necklace as well. I'm in love with this necklace! It just so happened to match what I was wearing today too! Thank you Susan!

01-04-2007 Artstream Ornament Artstream is also currently taking submissions for its upcoming February show Lovely Hearts. Follow the link for more information on submitting artwork. The show sounds like it's going to be great, I'll definitely be attending!

The Blog Love Project

Blog Love Project Announcing The Blog Love Project! This is the big project that involves the blogosphere that I was alluding to. I don't know why, but awhile ago this idea just popped into my head...crafty bloggers are always sending little goodies to eachother and I want to make a point of it. A crafty paying it forward if you will. I want to send a package/letter/message of love to each and every blog that I read. I will do it at my leisure. I will pick the blogs at random off of my bloglines, and I will personalize each package to the particular blogger that I am sending the "bloglove" to.

Now I currently have 157 feeds on my bloglines. I am fully prepared that this project might take me years, perhaps a decade. But I really want to try and do it. I want to put good vibes out into the universe that has provided me with endless inspiration and joy. I just want to give a little back.

Every time I send a package I will make a special post about the blog/blogger that I've sent to, and take pictures of the goods and put them into a Flickr set. I think I'll pick the first blogger right now!

Closes eyes...

Scrolls mouse willy nilly over blog links...

Clicks...

And the winner is...

Coffee Drinker!

Wish me luck on this ambitious venture!

First Project of the Year and Resolutions...

01-01-2007 Curtain Fabric I bought this fabric quite a few months ago on sale at JoAnn's. The color is a little distorted because I'm back to using my camera for awhile. (I usually borrow my parents' camera, hence better photos).

Our living room looked a little bare, because we took down the tree today, so I decided it was finally time to get going on the new curtains.

01-01-2007 Windows Before...01-01-2007 Windows After!

Before............................and After

You can't really tell, because of the darkness of the photos, but the mats on the painting to the left and right of the photos are dark blue and dark crimson, respectively. The new fabric really sets these off - I'm so psyched with the results! Hurray first crafty project of 2007.

Onto the resolutions - I'm trying to keep things realistic and manageable this year!

Resolutions 2007

  • I will stay off of the computer for one day a week. I want to impose this upon myself because oftentimes I find myself in a spiral of looking at new craft blogs, clicking my way through pages of photos on Flickr or crafty projects on Craftster. I will use this day to do creative things instead of looking at creative things!

  • I will work on choreography everyday. Even if it is for just five minutes. If I want to keep dance as an important part of my life, I have to make it a part of my life, everday.

  • I will keep one surface in my craft room clean at all times. I got this one from Sister Diane over at Craftypod. This one will take a little while to institute as I'm about to overhaul the whole room...

  • I will begin collecting vintage fabric and notions. The people's work that I admire the most often use vintage materials. I think that it just makes them a little more special, and I would like my products to have the same special quality.

I have one more big project for 2007 that involves the crafty blogosphere, but I want to wait a little longer to announce that. Stay tuned - and Happy New Year!
