Gloom and Doom (and Garlands and Knitting)

It has happened...first cold of the year, and it's a doozy! The aches and croaky voice started in on me yesterday at work and by this morning I had a fever, headache and a nose running like a faucet. Yippee!

To make today extra enjoyable it is gloomy and rainy here in Boston. Later in the afternoon, the already icky weather morphed into this:

SNOW!

SNOW! I couldn't believe it! Normally I would be the first to cheer for a first snow but a) It's October and b) It's crappy wet snow, not fluffy Christmas happiness inducing tra-la-la snow!

GRR, so that's my gloom and doom report for the day. Let's lighten things up a bit shall we?

After seeing many, many examples on blogs and Flickr, earlier this week I made a scrap paper garland for myself.

Garland

It's pretty cute, if I do say so myself! Bettie Page is hiding up there too!

Bettie Page!

I'm also back on the Holiday Handmade Crusade bandwagon. I'm ashamed to say that I've been a very lazy Craftastic Christmas Crusader in the past few months. Late with themes, late with prizes, but it's October people and it's time for me to get movin'! My October theme is Hearth and Home. Let me explain:

During autumn and harvest time, I get decidedly nest-y. I think something about my personality makes me want to prepare our little home and make it as comfortable as possible as we transition to spending more time indoors. So, therefore, I declare October's theme Hearth and Home. Make something that will spruce up someone on your gift list's home. This time of year is great for finding wreath making materials, or perhaps you could sew a pillow or create a beautiful piece of art. Anything to make a home more cozy! The sky is the the limit!

I've been working on multiple wash cloths for this very theme:

Tulip Dishcloths

I'm going to purchase locally made bars of soap, wrap them in the wash cloths and tie them up with some scrap fabric. These will go to some of the ladies in my family. Hopefully they will appreciate a little hand made goodness to brighten up their bathrooms. I have three out of five done and luckily these knit up fast.

Have any of you been doing some holiday crafting in advance? I'd love to hear about it :)

Alright folks, back to guzzling tea, blowing my nose and sleeping. REPEAT.

I, too, am trying to make as many gifts as possible or buy handmade. So far, I have a few items already stashed, some planned and some half-finished. My newlywed sister is getting baby/pet friendly tree ornaments; my mum, felted pillows....

We watched the Patriots game yesterday, and that certainly did look like a bit of gloomy weather.

I love the paper garland, so festive. I love the stitch pattern on the washcloths, they look great.

I have been making socks and sweaters for Christmas, and I can not believe how quickly the holidays are creeping up.

Oh I hate to hear that you are so sick! ...but I totally love that garland you made! How funny that we have to craft even when we are not feeling 100%. It's in the blood I guess.

I am getting down to planning my Christmas gifts so I am ashamed to say that I have not really done much on them yet. I am just planning. I'll prolly go through a massive all out craft making frenzy to get them all made in time. Sad but true.

Here's hoping you are over the fever and real nastiness of your illness and can continue to recuperate while creating. I love the colours of the wash clothes. The paper garland is so festive. I'm praying I get myself organised enough to finally make one for myself!

Blessings,

Ooooh, LOVE the banner. So cheery!

The snow, not so much. This is waaaay too early in the year for the white stuff. I swear I will migrate south if it keeps up.

I dropped you a line about the concert, but my email is uber-flakey. If you didn't get it lemme' know or I'll give you a call tonight or tomorrow morning. :-)

Visiting your cute blog via Dottie Angel; love that you love the vintage -antique to me- things. I grew up with them and they are still in use in my kitchen and house.
I've also been on a wash/dish cloth knitting kick and will give a little basket filled with cloths, soap, kitchen goodies, etc. I'm fairly sure the folks who get them will appreciate them; I've weeded out the "oh. thanks." crowd.
