The socks that took a year, or Pomatomus = DONE!

They're done! They're done! They're done! My first socks ever!

They were actually finished two weeks ago...but gosh blogging can be such a process when you're busy. Photos, hook up camera to laptop, upload to flickr, think of witty things to say, etc, etc... But I'm so happy to be taking a moment to do that just now! These socks - sheesh. I picked a toughy of a pattern for my first pair ever and I vowed not to knit anything else until I finished them. No new yarn, no new projects. Just these damned socks, for a whole year! I'm happy with them...but I definitely will be taking a break from this pattern. I'm newly obsessed with handmade socks, not just these beauts, but with the trillion pairs my mom just made me a for my birthday. (Complete awesomeness on my mom's part!) Now that I'm not afraid of the heel, heel flap, gusset and all of those fancy things, I look forward to attempting a few simpler pairs.
This is my face of triumph over Pomatomus:

The birthday celebrations are still in full swing here at the casa de Cost. Things kicked off on Monday when my brother Mike took me to the Muddy River Smokehouse for ribs with cornbread and beans and a yummy appetizer called gator eggs. Gator eggs are jalepeno peppers stuffed with cream cheese with an oniony dipping sauce, and they were delicious, but in my excitement I practically gave my throat third degree burns enthusiastically popping one into my mouth midsentence. Hot cream cheese = HOT! I = an idiot and cheerful fat girl :)
The foodie celebrations continued yesterday, the big day in question, with sushi with my sistah Ren. All I have to say is spicy scallop maki. Mmm. Deeeelish.
AND last night Matt and I went out to David's in Monument Square in Portland. We both had scallion and ginger crusted salmon with snow peas, asparagus and WASABI mashed potatoes, which I am convinced is the side dish of the gods. Awesome.
Matt bought me a totally cool t-shirty material skirt, that fits, my husband rules! He also bought me a signed copy of Big Fat Cookies by Elinor Klivans, (same lady that wrote the Cupcakes! for all you sweet tooths out there!), and this beautiful fawn necklace by Fig and Ginger, (which is en route in the mail).
I'm having a Cuban inspired bbq con mojitos on Saturday to celebrate a little more then the birthday festivities will be officially done. I can't wait for the weekend - until then I'm going to be painting dance studios tomorrow and Friday. Wish me luck!
Cheers, Your Nerd, Sarah
P.S. How cute is Cassie?

Happy Birthday! And congratulations on your first pair of socks! I've never made socks so I'm impressed. Yours are particularly beautiful.
The socks look lovely =]. And I randomly stumbled across your blog today...never been inspired to make one before. But yous did me in XD
Fantastic socks and a very cute kitty!
I am way impressed with the socks. Heck I would be impressed with a knitted potholder, but sock? Way!!!So excited for you.
And your kitty looks like my Googiewhump, who happily wanders about in kitty heaven, teaching all the other kitties how to relax, hunt, and have a terrific kitty power over their human families.
